Chambery is the capital of the department of Savoie, part of the French Alps in France, Europe. It has been the historical Savoy region capital since the 13th century. Then Amadeus V of Savoy made it his seat of power.

Geography:

Chambery was founded at crossroads of ancient routes: the Dauphine, Burgundy, Switzerland and Italy, between the Bauges and the Chartreuse Mountains and on the Leysse River. The metropolitan area has more than 100,000 inhabitants, reaching from the vineyard slopes of Combe de Savoie, to the shores of the Lac du Bourget, which is the largest natural lake located in France. Chambery is a major railroad hub of the Franco-Italian "Lyon-Turin Ferroviaire" rail link.

History:

The city was the Savoyard capital from 1295 to 1563. At its height, Savoyard weapons were highly respected, and many of Europe's largest and mightiest armies fought with weapons made in Savoy. The city was returned to the rulers of the House of Savoy in 1815. The establishment of the Société Académique de Savoie took place in 1820.
